Hot of the Vine
The World will little note nor long
remember what I say here, and, secure in that
knowledge, let me blather on a bit about a few
different wine-related, shall we say,
misconceptions, things you hear about matters
vinous which are often misconstrued.
1) You're probably not affected by sulfites
in wine- it's far more likely you are
reacting to other components in the wine,
such as protein bits.
2) On that note, there are far fewer
sulfites in wine than there ever have been,
due to modern winemaking methods.
3)Wine prices are (fairly) stable and the
quality of everyday wine is constantly
getting better. I've commented on this
before, but recent tastings I've attended
and held have reinforced that notion.
4) There continue to be new varietals
introduced into the Maryland wine scene- the
"Wine Boom" isn't over, it just keeps
getting better!
5) Sweet wines- long held in contempt by the
wine snobs amongst us- are enjoying a big
resurgence. We have delicious "sweeties"
from every wine region in the shop, and let
me tell you, they can be the perfect finis
to a great meal, with dessert or as dessert.
Try a Moscato, or a Monbazillac, or a Port,
or a late harvest wine. Oh, Boy!
