Hot off the Vine
New in
the news @ 4 Corners is a reconfiguration of the
wine floor. That's what was the prime motivation
for our big sale last month- we wanted to get
the inventory down (less to move, doncha know).
Spain keeps
getting bigger-try the Orellan Mencia from
Bierzo, for example- so it's gonna get more room
on the floor, & Italy continues its expansion.
Also, we'll adjust some regions(Australia comes
to mind) downward, not because of quality, but
because there are so many
good ones, all around the same price- a little
pruning won't hurt.
If you look around
and don't see a favorite, ask us-we're
accommodating .

Nobody
(sane) who deals much with wine is under the
impression that they could possibly know all the
varietals. Not being entirely sane, every once
in a while I get smug and think I do, but I'm
tellin' ya, that's a well you ain't gonna get to
the bottom of.
Case in point, a month or two ago Diane, one of
the wine Reps who calls on us, brought in a
Spanish wine to taste. She hadn't had it yet- we
were her first stop of the day- so she pulled
the cork, poured me a taste, and I nosed the
glass in the approved wine-snob manner.
I was intrigued-there was a "medicinal" aroma
welling up I'd never encountered before, and
when I finally tasted the wine it was
fascinating. Luckily, the grape varietal was
listed on the back-a rarity in Spain- neither of
us, nor another Rep who happened to be in the
shop, had ever heard of the grape-Prieto
Picudo, an obscure grape from central Spain
(and nowhere else) .- the few descriptions I
could find matched the character of the wine as
I tasted it.
They all mentioned an unusual "spiciness" or
"herbal bouquet"-wine writers tend to be less
direct about saying something like medicinal-
and one and all praised the grape for its
interesting characteristics.
Object lesson in humility- the best kind, since
good wine is involved.

UPCOMING EVENTS
"Wine
for Smarties", our Tasting program
in conjunction with The Bistro,
resumes the first Tuesday of the
month starting on March 4th
with the wines of South America-
lots of good wine at accessible
prices, along with the Bistro's
appetizers-call to reserve($30 a
session)
Also, early in the month- we're
going to taste a selection of
California wines(and a great
Champagne,as it happens) on Friday,
March 7th @ the Greystone
Grill, serious wines that'll get
your motor running. Ethan Lavin and
I have conspired to bring you some
gems-$50 a pop, and well worth it.
At the end of March, meet us @
Slade's Inn(across from the Manor
tavern) a beautiful bed and
breakfast at which we're doing a
series of Dinners,some themed, some
not-On March 29th (a Friday) we'll
pair the French Country Cuisine of
Emil Sueck with the wonderful
burgundies of Louis Latour- We'll be
tasting the 1999 Chateau
Corton-Grancey which received
100(!!!) points from the Wine
Spectator, and a slew of other 1er
Cru classe wines from their
portfolio, commented on by Tim
Cousins of M. Touton, who is the
East Coast Representative of the
winery.
I quite enjoyed tasting through the
wines with him and making the
selections. The wines stand on their
own, but his commentary and "local
knowledge" added an interesting
perspective.
This'll fill fast, so have your
people call our people- not always
easy to sample a 100 point wine, and
this one has had time to develop in
the bottle-
