The Wine -O- File

Hot off the Vine

We've got a problem- the kind you want to have, truthfully, but a problem nonetheless- too many good wines! I taste somewhere between 40 & 80 wines a week in the shop, and, in addition, when I can, I go to Distributor tastings-last Thursday I had the opportunity to go to the Inn at Government House on Calvert and Biddle Sts. and taste through the portfolio of Siema Wines, a smaller distributorship with a really nice group of wineries represented.

More on that later- the point here being I'm seldom shown a badly made wine- don't be deceived, they're out there, it's just that if you establish yourself as a store which truly carries and sells) fine wines, what's brought for your perusal how formal can you get!) rises in quality quickly. Price is a smaller factor than you might think- there are an incredible number of inexpensive “unknowns” out there, seeking a place on the shelves of retailers willing to hand sell them. Now, that's what Steve and I are shown, and we have to make hard choices, based on factors like how crowded is the category, seasonal considerations, and just plain floor space- so your part is to come in, ask us, and we'll fix ya up with great wines. Do Your Part!!!

Cellar News New stuff in the store, in no particular order, some of them one-off deals, some small lot stuff, some just new to us:

Orin Swift makes a wine called “the Prisoner” which we've sold for a few months now-It's $39., and it's great if that's in your budget, a got to try it!) New from him to us is his wine called “Papillion”- it's $70, and truly the price is worth it.

There's an obscure Italian White grape called Albana del Romagna
I bought a bunch cheap, and we're selling it for $11.-really nice, medium weight, flavorful wine

Another good deal- Taltarni Shiraz- I got a deal on the '01 vintage, and the distributor gave me the same deal on the '04s. Thirteen bucks for a serious Shiraz-what's not to like?

Actually, Australia is chock full of discounted wines look for the yellow tags) simply because we need to develop space and some wines aren't made in sufficient quantity to keep in stock all year, so when we run low, we discount the remainders.

Wine-O-File Datebook

For those of you still awaiting the Clarendon Hills Tasting, they still haven't released the'05s- I'm steadily harassing John Chadwick about it, never fear.

On the horizon is a high end Single Malt tasting- 11-12 top-drawer Scotch producers- if you're on our Email list, we'll get the word out ASAP or just check on this site.

Oh yeah, this month's Sale theme is “West Coast Reds”- all 750s from Oregon, Washington & California are 17% off all month- good time to stock up, or to buy that $100 bottle you'll get $17 off on that alone!!!!
